Seasonal Roof Checklist

Owning a home is a dream, but keeping its curb appeal can be a chore. No matter if you’re a new homeowner, a few years into home ownership or a seasoned vet, using this guide will pay to know how to keep your home’s exterior in tip-top shape each season.

Spring

It’s time to see what the winter blast has done to the outside of your home.

  • Inspect roof for damage from winter storms
  • Assess the state of your roof shingles to determine if a new roof is needed (especially if your roof is over 20 years old)
  • Inspect siding for signs of damage
  • Make sure your gutters and downspouts are clear of debris so water can flow easily
  • Inspect your ceilings and attic for leaks or water damage
  • Check your windows for cracks and ice damage
  • Check for growing moss and algae

Summer

With family vacations and outdoor fun, don’t bog yourself down with needless projects.

  • Inspect roof along with shingles, gutters, soffit, fascia, flashing, chimney, and vents for noticeable damage.
  • Make sure your gutters and downspouts are clear of debris to have rain water flow away from your house
  • Clean any dirt or fungal growth from your siding and roof
  • Trim any trees that are overgrown which are close to your roof and/or gutters
  • Fix and replace and broken windows or cracks

Fall

The leaves are changing and it’s time to prepare your home for winter.

  • Ensure that your attic is well-insulated to prevent any possible ice dams building up on your roof
  • Clean out debris from gutters and check if repairs are needed like tightening brackets and rejoining sections.
  • Check all window seals and fix window seals
  • Inspect siding and fix or tighten any loose pieces
  • Remove all debris from your roof and could damage shingles or gutters

Winter

Winter can give a beating to the exterior of your home. It pays to stay on top of any potential damage after a winter storm hits.

  • Monitor snow build up on your roof and remove yourself if you can do it safely; otherwise hire a professional after a big winter storm
  • Check your roof after a winter storm for any downed branches or roof damage
  • Inspect for ice build up that could be harmful to your family or your gutters
